Action Vids

+*Supernatural – Series Recap by Gentlesideoffury a.k.a. xdudeyoufuglyx (LJ account), ensemble (spoilers through OMG I don’t know!): This vid makes the show look like an epic feature film.  If you’re boggled by the number of cuts at beginning of the vid just wait until you reach the last minute and a half where literally all hell breaks loose.  You’ll be wetting your pants and picketing the studios for a movie deal after watching this.  Totally awesome.  Totally epic.

+*Faint Remix by Gentlesideoffury a.k.a. xdudeyoufuglyx (LJ account), ensemble (spoilers through “NRftW” 3x16): No words can adequately describe this vid; is there such thing as action angst? Rarely have I seen a vid that seamlessly incorporates clips from “Ghostfacers” but somehow it works.  The last 30 seconds of the vid are the frosting on the cake. Whatever you do, do not blink while watching.

+So Cold by sweetiejen, ensemble (spoilers through “HaH” 4x10): This is a S4-heavy vid that is solidly assembled and hits all the right notes, and the visual parallels and matched clips in this vid are stunning.

*Destiny by freedam, Dean and Sam (spoilers through the end of S2): Dean and his destiny.  This vid jumps straight into the thick of things and just keeps building.  Set to a powerful driving beat that fits Dean to a T, this vid maintains the tension with great editing and fast cuts.  There’s only one word for this: intense.

*Dean’s Overture by dragonfly_sg1, Dean (spoilers through “RSaM” 3x06): Dean, Dean, and more Dean.  Set to the snappy William Tell Overture, this is like a fireworks display of Deanisms.  It will have you grinning and giggling.

The Journey by hay1ock, Sam, Dean and Co. (spoilers through the end of S2): An excellent choice of episode distinctive clips and an editing that mimics the tempo change in the music makes this a great S3 recap vid.  If you want to relive S2 in three minutes and rock out to some heart-pounding music watch this.

*Carol of the Supernatural by dragonfly_sg1, Sam and Dean (spoilers through “Hell House”): This is my favorite action video (shhh, never mind that it’s set to Christmas music and its summer).  The edits were synchronized with the music beautifully, requiring lots and lots and lots of cuts.  It’s fast, it’s pretty, it builds nicely with the music, it will get your heart pumping.

*Bricks by sockkpuppett, Sam and Dean (spoilers through “IMToD”): This is a prime example of how a song can make a video.  Aretha Franklin and Metallica are awesome, just the right mix of attitude and grit, perfect for the show and those determined Winchesters.

There and Back Again by tinkabell007, Sam and Dean and guns (spoilers through “Playthings”): An action video that makes you wonder how it’s possible that Sam and Dean aren’t in full body casts.  It has fast cuts, interesting effects, and a series of door-kicking clips I really like.

Het Vids

+*Pretty by proofpudding, Sam/Ruby (spoilers through “IKWYDLS” 4x09): superb framing and editing set to a whisper-quiet, bare-bones song that fits perfectly with the complicated push-pull of Sam and Ruby’s relationship.

*Let Myself Fall by dragonfly_sg1, Sam/Madison (spoilers for “Heart): Sam, Madison, and a barrel full of angst.  The clip selection and editing yield a wistful and tragic atmosphere that matches the song perfectly.  You’ll want to watch “Heart” again after this video.

Kingdom by the Sea by maygin80, Sam/Madison (spoilers for “Heart”): The same flavor as “The Good Out There”: heartbreaking, bittersweet, tragic, and dripping with Sam and Madison angst.  The music is beautiful and the sepia-colored clips with the lines from “Annabelle Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe make this feel like an extended movie trailer.

Slash Vids

+*Climbing Up The Walls by obsessive24, Sam/Dean, Simon/River (Firefly/Serenity), Nathan/Peter (Heroes), (spoilers through “AHBL-2” 2x22): Even though it’s a multi-fandom vid I have to include it because it’s one of the best vids I’ve ever seen.  It’s claustrophobic, disturbing, and everything a vid about dysfunctional incestuous sibling relationships should be.  Warning: sexually explicit scenes and manips.

+Map of the Problematique by ruskiebiz, Dean/Castiel (spoilers though “HaH” 4x10): A dramatic vid set to the driving beat of Muse.  I’m a fan of the dutch angles and the yellow false coloring.  There are no Dean/Castiel manips, so this vid could also be considered canon/gen but the vidder designated it slash.

+Snow on the Sahara by absrip, Sam/Dean (spoilers through “HaH” 4x10): The manips and extensive use external source material set this vid apart from other wincest vids.  The sweeping desert vistas surprisingly fit with the grey, dark atmosphere of the show, and I’m still wondering where the shot of an Impala-looking car driving through the desert came from.

+i’m yours by proofpudding, Sam/Dean and Jared/Jensen (spoilers through “MS” 3x11 and the S3 gag reel): A happy feel-good vid with an overload of cuteness and funnies.  You’ll find it impossible not to smile.

*The Scars of All I'll Ever Know by dayln03, Sam/Dean (spoilers through “Fresh Blood” 3x07): Sam left and can never go back.  A beautiful song choice, mind-blowing manipulations, and a full story arc, make this Stanford era vid one of the best and most satisfying I’ve seen.  It screams longing and is achy and just … guh at the same time.

AU Vids

+*Better Than You Had It by wordplay___, Dean/Jess, Sam/Jess (spoilers through “FB” 3x07): Clearly I have an addiction to Jess and awesome external source material.  This vid so well constructed that half the time I felt like this was a completely different show with the same characters … strangely surreal.  I take that as a hallmark of a good AU vid.

+*Even in Death by secretlytodream, Sam/Jess (spoilers through “NRftW” 3x16): Dark, disturbing, and thankfully AU, think “CSPWDT” featuring an undead Sam and Jess. The melding of external source material with SPN clips is astounding and the narrative makes this vid exceptional.

+*All In Your Hands by secretlytodream, Sam, Ruby, Dean, Azazel (spoilers through “NRftW” 3x16): Sam goes darkside.  This vid isn’t afraid of being flashy.  Its false-colored green, the editing/affects are eye-catching, and there are tons of images packed into a single frame.

+Worth Saving by slytherin_eyes, Sam (spoilers through “MS” 3x11): Seamless external source material and a strong narrative make this vid something to watch.  It’s Sam, drugs, prison, and some serious emotional trauma.

+I’m Not The Man I Used To Be by secretlytodream, Dean (spoilers through “JiB” 3x12): Dean becomes a demon.  A slightly disturbing look at Dean running off the rails with the signature gritty flash and glitz of this vidder’s other projects.

*One Year Only by dayln03, Dean, Sam (spoilers through the end of S2): Dean’s last year before his deal is up.  Fast and flashy, with tons of cuts, and a signature grainy style, this vid is a feast for the eyes.

Keep This a Secret by dayln03, Dean/Carmen (spoilers for “WiAWSNA 2x20): Carmen and Dean and what could’ve been.  This vid is beautifully assembled with clips from “WiAWSNB” and other sources.  The effects are amazing, the manipulations well done, and the red filtering gives it a striking, distinctive look.

Parody and Humor Vids

+*Channel Hopping by ash48, Sam and Dean (spoilers through “Ghostfacers” 3x): SPN set to the theme songs of Day of Our Lives, ER, Night Rider, The Twilight Zone, and Friends (to name a few).  You’ll be snortlaughing into your hand by the end.

+love today by lightupmynight, Jared and Jensen (spoilers for S1-S3 gag reels): LOL! :D XD !!!  Watch this if you’re in a bad mood.  :)

The Impala Awards by lsketch42, loads of characters (spoilers through “BUaBS”): It’s a cracked-out wanna-be Emmy Awards for Supernatural.  With categories like “The Best Spawn of Satan” and “The Best Reason to Fire the Show’s Hairstylist” how can you not laugh?

I’m Super by askewedmind, everyone (spoilers through “Hell House”): Supernatural set to a lispy show tune-inspired “I’m Super” by Big Gay Al from South Park.  That pretty much says it all.  It features clips from the season one gag reel and Jensen and Jared wearing cowboy hats.  *cackles*

Badass by arcthalia, John and the YED, (spoilers through “BUaBS”): John and the YED bond over mutual parental disgruntlement in such a cracktastic way, you’ll be laughing your head off.  It ends with a shout out to the fandom.  Hey, if we can’t make fun of ourselves, who can?

*Jared Ripped His Pants by kiwioflurve, Jared (spoilers for “Heart” and the S2 gag reel): Set to “Ripped Pants” by Spongebob and the Losers, this vid is a hilarious extension of the infamous ripped pants incident.  You’ll want to watch it just to see the look on Jared’s face and watch Jensen laugh is pants off.  *glee*

Batman and Boy Blunder by ash48, Sam and Dean (spoilers for “ABDaBR” 3x03): Dean as Batman and Sam and Boy Blunder.  Inspired by the canoncrack that was “ABDaBR”, the slapstick humor continues complete with 1950’s TV show sound effects.

Dean Winchester: Hard Knock Life by Skeezerbeans, Dean and Sam (spoilers through the end of S2): Dean (Dr. Evil) and his Mini-Me (Sam) lead a hard life, but it's a funny life, too.  The Ghetto Anthem remix of Hard Knock Life by Mike Meyers (yay!) and Jay-Z is so perfect you won’t stop laughing.

Wonderboy! by angstslashhope, Dean and Sam (spoilers through the end of S1): a silly, giggle-inducing look at Dean as Tenacious D’s Wonder Boy and Sam as Nasty Man.

That one was well done.

I found another AU rec I forgot to add that features Sam, Dean, and a little girl (Jess and Sam's daughter). It was bizarre to see a child riding in the back of the Impala with Sam and Dean up front. I think well done AU vids might be one of my new favorite fannish things.

I can't find a link to the vid anymore or the vidder on LJ or youtube otherwise I'd send it your way. I downloaded the vid; it's called "A Little Life" by herebutnotremembered if you're interested in trying to find it. Seeing the boys (Sam) with a child did something to my ovaries...

I remember finding out some time ago, much to my surprise, that I quite enjoyed stories where one or the other of them (but especially Sam) was a parent. I suppose it just brings a different part of the character into view. (Honestly, after TKAA, I'm not sure I'd really want the show taking either of them there).

I'm with you. Although I think it has to do with the female part of my brain and a secret desire for those Winchester genes to get passed along to another generation than with anything plot/story/character related. But parental boys are something owned by fandom; I don't ever see the Show going there as it just doesn't fit with the boys' journey (maybe a cractastic AU/dream/hallucination episode though).

I actually think the show is really missing an opportunity in not developing the show as the centerpiece of a multigenerational story. I really think there's a lot of room to move back into the past, (well before Samuel and Deanna Campbell) as well as to, hopefully, extend Sam and Dean in the future.

(I am also convinced Dean's got to have at least a few kids out there by now).

maybe a cractastic AU/dream/hallucination episode though

I'd love that idea. Although it really should be Sam doing it since Dean has twice gotten to experience a different timeline. And certainly by next year both boys would be plenty old enough to have started a family in a more normal existence.

I really think there's a lot of room to move back into the past

Like Samuel Colt past? *grin* I'd love that. Kripke has mentioned that idea before even if I got the sense it was more a throw-away comment. A SPN western would be wonderful. If there was a separate series I bet ANYTHING that JP and JA would return to make guest appearances as other characters or Sam and Dean (why do I have a feeling those two are going to jump at a chance to work together after the series ends?).

as well as to, hopefully, extend Sam and Dean in the future.

I'd love to have Sam and Dean with a wide open future at the series end, but I'm not holding out for it. Kripke is far too trigger happy and sometimes when a creator wants it to be THE END they make it "the end" literally.

I am also convinced Dean's got to have at least a few kids out there by now

This is what I'll fall back on IF Sam and Dean don't drive off into the sunset in the Impala.

it really should be Sam doing it since Dean has twice gotten to experience a different timeline

YES! Poor Sam has been denied twice now. Not only did Dean get 4 years with Mary, he got days in his wish!world and time with her as a teenager. It seems like a cosmic injustice that Sam hasn't had a mother ever in any world. Oh, the angst! It hurts. It burns. It hurts. ;)

And certainly by next year both boys would be plenty old enough to have started a family in a more normal existence.

Dean especially, who will be 31! This is one of the reasons why I wasn't too hot on Dean/Anna (who was still in college younger than 22). It's not that I don't think Dean couldn't get a young, hot thing, but I'd like to start seeing him with women who are more age appropriate (like Jamie) being that even horndog!Dean has got to have matured a little bit since S1. Also, dirtyoldman!Dean isn't very appealing.

why do I have a feeling those two are going to jump at a chance to work together after the series ends?

I've wondered actually whether they would, make a special effort that is. I'd be very curious to have someone ask them this. Someone asked at the last con whether they'd still be close friends, but I think that's a very different question. I remember back during the Phantom Traveler commentary, I think it was Jensen who talked about his preference in working with a variety of people whereas Jared preferred known quantities.

It seems like a cosmic injustice that Sam hasn't had a mother ever in any world.

It's an interesting psychological thing to ponder. Perhaps because Sam's had no one he's more able to find what he needs in a variety of people. Perhaps because Dean has had one, he has a harder time replacing her.

It's not that I don't think Dean couldn't get a young, hot thing, but I'd like to start seeing him with women who are more age appropriate (like Jamie)

I don't know that Jamie and Anna struck me as being all that different in age, though at least in the text, Anna was supposed to be young. It's rather like Harmony Lucy talking about Dixon being old, around 30, when the actress herself is 27).

As for Dean, he's certainly pretty open to them young (see Great Pumpkin) but then he dreams of Lisa who has to be his age or even older.

I'd be very curious to have someone ask them this.

OK, I will rush the microphone and ask them this! :D

I think it would have to be the right project for them to agree to it (and not just any old put-together thing), but it seems like genuine chemistry and off-set friendship isn't a common thing in that industry (they remind me a little of my impression of the Pitt/Clooney friendship).

Perhaps because Sam's had no one he's more able to find what he needs in a variety of people.

Huh. I hadn't thought about it that way ... similar to "you don't know what you're missing so you don't miss it". Maybe Sam has a more abstract longing for a mother, more like a daydream, one that isn't quite painful but more of a curiosity while, like you said, Dean knows what has been lost. Certainly children who have lost a parent to death or divorce who were old enough to remember/processes that loss are more emotionally affected than infants and have a more difficult time adjusting to "the after".

I don't know that Jamie and Anna struck me as being all that different in age, though at least in the text, Anna was supposed to be young.

Really? I immediately zeroed in on the age difference. Jamie seemed late, late 20's maybe early 30's to me and Anna struck me as being no older than 24, maybe 25. In H&H the psychologist said Anna was still in university, not yet graduated, which--unless didn't immediately go to college after high school--makes her no older than 21 (maybe 22).

It's rather like Harmony Lucy talking about Dixon being old, around 30, when the actress herself is 27).

That line struck me as strange as Lucy seemed to be in her late 20's to me (at it seems the actress who played her was!).

he dreams of Lisa who has to be his age or even older.

Maybe that's the difference between one-night flings and Dean's secret desire. Maybe he just horndogs the younger women because he knows they likely won't be looking for something long term and/or he won't be likely to form a deeper attachment ... self denial of the forbidden fruit? :P Oh, Dean, you are so complex for a guy that pretends to be so very shallow. *throws hands in the air*

they remind me a little of my impression of the Pitt/Clooney friendship

I think the difference is that Pitt and Clooney could choose to work together whereas that's not how JA and JP met, and thus also Pitt and Clooney are thought of as separate people. Of course, in SPN fandom there are so many people who don't like one or the other actor or character that there may not be much of a demand as to whether they work together or not. I know that for me, though, it'll always be in the back of my mind whenever I watch one of their projects, thinking about what role the other could have taken.

Maybe Sam has a more abstract longing for a mother, more like a daydream, one that isn't quite painful but more of a curiosity

I was even thinking that to someone who has grown up, not only without a mother but without any female figures (so far as we know), that he may build the concept of "mother" to represent the missing parts of himself, whereas for anyone who had one, that's a concept ingrained early on (and still differs considerably from person to person).

That line struck me as strange as Lucy seemed to be in her late 20's to me (at it seems the actress who played her was!).

Yes, she's older than Sam and not, it would seem, dramatically younger than Dixon. I'm guessing the part was supposed to be written for a teenage girl but the dialogue was never adjusted post-casting.

Maybe he just horndogs the younger women because he knows they likely won't be looking for something long term.

Maybe, although I think age is an iffy factor there since older women are often much more practical about men. Maybe he just has an instinct for women who are in their frivolous stage.

That is very sweet. Makes me hope those two end up working together again after SPN ends. It'll be interesting to see if either of them stay in Vancouver and continue to be roommates or go back to LA.

to represent the missing parts of himself

This is where those darn chocolate chip cookies come into play. ;) I always thought they were a clever characterization device/relationship dynamic indicator. Those cookies, to me, represented everything that Sam seemingly didn't have as a child (not to say literally Sam never had chocolate chip cookies) ... domesticity, stability, affectionate love ... things commonly associated in the SPNverse with idealized female figures (Jess, Carmen, Mary). So, yes, I agree with you; Jess could've very well filled a hole in Sam's psyche.

I think whenever people have been part of a well liked pairing, people tend to think of them togethr, but I think that's even further enhanced by the pair being good friends. I'm trying to think now if some of those (Starsky & Hutch, Dukes of Hazard) actually worked together repeatedly after their shows ended.

It'll be interesting to see if either of them stay in Vancouver and continue to be roommates or go back to LA.

Certainly Jensen could have done well for himself if he'd bought a property when he first went up there for Dark Angel, as he's been back repeatedly. I imagine he's spent as much time there as in his L.A. house over the past 10 years. Of course since JP sold his L.A. property maybe he'll camp out a while at JA's before making a move. I can't imagine he'd opt to stay in Vancouver unless he was working there though. I didn't get the sense either was fond of living there.

I agree, though I suspect that like many things in the series, the characterization issue was largely overlooked in favor of the practical issue of demonstrating Jess was around and distracting the audience.

Now that you mention it though it's interesting how food is used to connote female compatibility. With Carmen and Mary in WIaWSNB, I don't know as I paid that much attention because we know Dean has an affinity for food in general, whereas we hardly ever see Sam eat even if Jared was actually eating in a scene. The nouvelle cuisine restaurant the family goes to in WIaWSNB is, I assume, Sam's choice, since he's the one taking Mary out for her birthday.

I didn't get the sense either was fond of living there.

I get this sense, too. I suppose LA is the entertainment hub and an actor needs to be where the jobs are. Plus it's warmer and there are palm trees.

I recall JA saying JP originally bought his house "with a friend" and then justified his moving in because "they spend time together anyway" and "Jared was lonely in that big house all alone". I couldn't help be curious why JP's friend wasn't living in the house they apparently helped purchase ... unless it was Sandy. And if that's the case, I could see JP wanting to sell it and move once SPN wrapped up.

the practical issue of demonstrating Jess was around and distracting the audience.

We couldn't have Sam's attentions divided between Dean and someone else, could we? ;) The nature of Jess's death and Sam, the walking ball of angst, were things that really drew me into the series. I appreciated the parallels between Sam and John's stories and sense that something malign with a deep history was grinding away behind the surface plot. Nothing like a slowly unspooling mystery to keep an audience engaged.

it's interesting how food is used to connote female compatibility. With Carmen and Mary in WIaWSNB

I think Dean will attach himself to anyone that feeds him (like a puppy). Certainly his subconscious self associates love/domesticity/security with food. In WIaWSNB, Mary fed him a giant toasted sandwich. Carmen was all about getting him a hamburger after his tower of asparagus at the restaurant; she also brought him beer as a comforting gesture when he felt out of sorts about Sam. Then dream!Lisa was associated with a picnic.

"Jared was lonely in that big house all alone". I couldn't help be curious why JP's friend wasn't living in the house they apparently helped purchase ... unless it was Sandy.

My sense is that the "lonely" explanation was a bit jokey and that the real point was that JA needed new living quarters quickly. If anything I'm surprised they hadn't done this sooner, but then JA had a roommate already though I'm not clear on who it was.

I've no idea who the friend was/is but I'm more curious why Jared would buy a house with someone, especially since, having sold his L.A. house, you'd think he'd have the capital to buy it alone. Sharing property is a nuisance best avoided if one can afford it (and if it was Sandy, that's a good example of why). My guess would be that it was to facilitate a quick sale/transfer when he no longer needed it, or to have a co-owner who would reside in and maintain it if he ended up back in L.A. for a long period. Didn't Jared say that their bodyguard lived with them? If so, he'd seem to be the obvious choice.

Then dream!Lisa was associated with a picnic.

Wow, yes! I'd forgotten about that! I guess that explains the demise of his relationship with Cassie. I think she only gave him tea and coffee during the episode!

Good points. You know, it seems that a lot of show biz people in Vancouver keep roommates, which I always thought strange. But when viewed in those terms it makes complete sense.

Didn't Jared say that their bodyguard lived with them?

I don't recall that specifically, but it doesn't mean it was said. I only remember and interview where one of them discussed their body guard (Cliff, I think) bringing over steaks/meat and BBQing for them.

I only remember and interview where one of them discussed their body guard (Cliff, I think) bringing over steaks/meat and BBQing for them.

I think we're both remembering the same conversation. It was a Q&A at Eyecon where he was asked who did the cleaning and cooking and Jared laughed and said Cliff. He then mentioned the steak grilling. So my guess was that Cliff does the cleaning (whether Jared was joking or not) because he lives there. Which would also make sense if he's a bodyguard for both.

What surprised me was that no one followed that up by asking why Jared and Jensen need a full-time bodyguard? I can see them having security people on set or on location, and perhaps at public events (though no one seemed to be present at the soap box derby). But I wouldn't think they're well known enough for that (and it's not like either can't handle minor situations). What prompted this? Maybe they just like to call him that and he's more of a PA (which with their hours they could use). I'll have to look at the credits in S4, because they often get onscreen credit.

why Jared and Jensen need a full-time bodyguard?

I'd be surprised if this was the case, too. Vancouver isn't a known for its aggressive fans/media. I have friends who live in the same building and also know the roommates of a couple main actors in Battlestar Galactica and there are no bodyguards.

I'll have to look at the credits in S4, because they often get onscreen credit.

If you find anything noteworthy would you let me know? Now I'm curious. :)

Well Jensen in particular seems to bring out the crazy, so who knows. And the guys do like to go out and have gotten into at least one scrap as a result so perhaps a bodyguard's been around for a while now. I'll have to look at the credits on the DVD set(s) because with those names being crammed into a corner and raced through to boot, I'm not sure I'll be able to pick out anything on my S4 recordings!
